Gin Can Speed Up Your Metabolism

That’s right. Turns out gin & tonic might actually help you lose weight.

Researchers from the University of Sigulda in Latvia say that when you take a shot of your favourite spirit the ‘after burn’ effect of it speeds up your metabolism, boosting your body’s calorie-burning potential for up to an hour after you down it. That’s about how long it takes for your liver to process it.

In the study they gave two groups of mice the equivalent of a shot’s worth of either water or gin  before measuring their calorie-burning potential. The mice who drank water had no major uplift in their metabolism, the gin mice had a 17% increase in their metabolic rate.

If they want to do this study in humans, I’d be happy to be part of the gin group!
