New drone flying rules released by Transport Canada

If you own a recreational drone, you may want to check this out.

Transport Canada just unveiled new safety rules and regulations that drone enthusiasts must follow in order to use their UAV’s while not causing any interference with aircraft, law enforcement/first responder operations, or other serious situations such as forest fires.

According to the new rules, you cannot fly your drone:

  • higher than 90 m above the ground
  • closer than 75 m from buildings, vehicles, vessels, animals, people/crowds, etc.
  • closer than nine km from the centre of an aerodrome (any airport, heliport, seaplane base or anywhere that aircraft take-off and land)
  • within controlled or restricted airspace
  • within nine km of a forest fire
  • where it could interfere with police or first responders
  • at night or in clouds
  • if you can’t keep it in sight at all times
  • if you are not within 500 m of your drone
  • if your name, address, and telephone number are not clearly marked on your drone.

Some people are on and off about some of these rules, but a good chunk of them were created based on past experience. I remember firefighters having a rough time during the Fort McMurray wildfires in 2016 because of drones interfering with their operations.

Now, what happens if you disobey these rules?

You’re looking at a hefty fine of just about $3000.00!

I think they are super cool, but we have to ensure we use them safely!
