You know about the Easter traditions we practice in this corner of the world. But here’s a few you might not be aware of in other places…..
Norway- TV channels run crime and mystery shows every year at Easter. Milk companies even print crime stories and brain teasers on their cartons.
Sweden and Finland- Kids dress as witches and go door to door bringing decorated willow branches. They’re supposed to bring blessings and drive away evil spirits.
Germany- They hang eggs in the trees.
Italy– In Florence, a cart full of fireworks is brought to the main square. When ‘Gloria’ is sung from inside the church, the Archbishop sets a dove-shaped rocket off. It’s supposed to hit the cart, setting off an explosion of festive fireworks. What could possibly go wrong?
Slovakia and Czech Republic- On Easter Monday young men go around whipping young women’s butts with whips made out of willow twigs!
They walk from house to house and whip the behinds of the girls who live there, and the girls give them decorated eggs and drinks in return.
It’s supposed to bring the girls beauty and fertility for the coming year.
