Is the term “Newfie” derogatory?

Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain’s CNN TV show “Parts Unknown” is apologizing for calling Newfoundlanders “Newfie”.

This is a nickname many find offensive.

“Parts Unknown” used the term “Newfie” in a tweet (now deleted) promoting this Sunday’s episode on Newfoundland and Labrador.

The twitter account shared an article with Newfoundland-related books and local slang, saying “Embrace the Newfies as they are.”

Users quickly shared the term is derogatory, with origins implying Newfoundlanders are unintelligent and lazy.

Is this a term you know is derogatory? Do you use it? Will you continue to use it or stop using it?
